"Hello World" ....a customary start to someones first blog i would think. My name is Tarun Sharma and i am currently studying computer science engineering in PESIT, Bangalore. I am in my THIRD semester right now(Second year) , and would like to share the projects i have done so with all my readers .
In my first semester itself , I was selected into 'Student Nokia Developer' , a club associated with Nokia in college for app and tech development . Here i made a simple Rock Paper Scissors game for windows phone 7 using C# and the XNA game studio platform.
Inspired to learn more , I ended up learning how to use OpenCV ,a library for used for image processing . Using OpenCV on visual studio , I first made a face detector, and then a hand detector using trained haar classifiers. I also learned alot about how image processing actually works using matrices .
Using raw images as a training set to detect an object of interest drew my attention immeadiatly. I was curious and know how this worked and also do more on gesture recognition.
In my second semester I joined Microsoft bootcamp in our college and after two months published an app on the Windows Store which allows users to use hand gestures to scroll. "Hands Free Cake Book" ,(http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-in/app/hands-free-cake-book/8e96aaa1-9f20-4a27-9649-cc2ecf1b13cc) , today has just over a 1000 downloads from countries all over the world .
It contains step wise instructions for baking cakes and allows the user to scroll to the next step using his/her hand gestures .The app is written completely in javascript and is a unique app on the windows store since it uses gesture recognition.
This sparked my interest in machine learning. I wanted to know how a computer can get "trained" .
I took a coursera course on "machine learning" in my holidays along with which i took up an internship at Student Nokia Developer .
The course was taken by Andrew NG , a professor at Stanford , and was very informative and thought provoking . I learned about linear regression , logistic regression ,neural networks etc.
I also learned how to use Octave to write algorithms to perform tasks like prediction models etc.
I used sample data and algorithms like linear and logistic regression , to train and predict a new result on Octave.(https://github.com/tarunsharma1/ML_linear_and_logistic_regression_algorithms)
I am very interested in learning more about machine learning and data analysis and applying them to solve real world problems. I have also joined 'Centre for cloud computing and big data lab' in college recently through which i will be learning how to use hadoop and many other analysis algorithms.
I have also done a few hardware projects ...a quadcopter which detects humans and is controllable through the internet (used arduino ,raspberry pi ,imu-6050,webcam ,OpenCV ,ssh) (https://github.com/tarunsharma1/quadcopterarduino). In curiosity of knowing what is NodeJS i also made a websocket server and an app using which you can use your windows phone as a wii remote to play games on your pc(used nodejs, websockets,C#,java.robot)
I have also conducted a hands on session about windows phone 8 development. The session was conducted in Alliance University , Bangalore in front of an audience of 50 plus third year engineering students.
I have a keen interest in data analysis and result prediction using machine learning algorithms and I would like to take part in as many hackathons as possible so that apart from implementing more projects , I learn more from the other participants and experts .
